Meet Dede Koswara, a 35 year old Indonesian man who’s body has been taken over by uncontrollable wart growth. After scraping his knee as a kid, these warts started to grow on his arms and legs. Now, the growths have become so large and cumbersome, he couldn’t do daily tasks. He lost his job, his wife deserted him, and because of the growths he couldn’t take care of himself let alone his children.
After being the butt of many jokes in his village, Dede wound up at a “freak” show and it was this exposure as “the Tree Man” doctors became aware of his condition. After many tests, doctors concluded that Dede’s growth was a result of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and an immune system that couldn’t fight off the warts. As a result, Dede’s warts grew out of control. According to doctors, the likelihood of have this defiency is less than one in a million.
Since then, Dede has undergone extensive surgery to have his warts removed. One doctor believes that his condition could be cleared up with daily doses of synthetic Vitamin A, which has been proven to supress the growth of wart associated with HPV.
“He won’t have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands,” Dr Gaspari said.
“Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life.”
Dede now has regained the use of his hands…he can even text on a cell phone. About 4lbs of warts have been removed and for the first time in 20 years he can use his hands and feet without pain. He’s going to have more surgeries and skin graphs to remove the warts and is taking Vitamin A to ensure that the warts don’t grow back.

Wanna know how Dede’s doing? Check out my update.

My guess is that his hands will never be completely back to normal, but since his last surgery they’ve become more functional. There seems to be a lot of scar tissue left over from the warts so it might be impossible for that to ever go away w/o more surgeries. I’ll update my blog again if anything new happens though!

Dede said that his warts began after he cut his knee as a child, he noticed that he started to get these warts/growths. I assume that he was infected with HPV at this point. Since he was unable to fight off the infection like most people the warts became so extreme.
